What Is a Seal Strip Steel Wire Core?
Look at the cross-section of a car door seal and you will usually see three layers: a soft rubber or TPE skin, a sponge or dense rubber body, and a thin metal skeleton running through the middle. That skeleton is the seal strip steel wire core — in the trade simply called the steel core, wire carrier, or seal steel core. It is a formed steel wire, or a set of wires, that is embedded inside the weatherstrip during extrusion so the finished seal can hold its shape and grip the body flange.
Without the steel core the seal would sag, flatten, and slide off the flange. The core provides the spring energy that keeps the rubber lips in contact with the glass or door frame for years of open-and-close cycles.
Where Steel Wire Cores Are Used
- Door opening seals — the U-shaped carrier that clamps onto the body flange.
- Glass run channels — the carrier that forms the window guide and holds the flocked or coated lip.
- Trunk and hood seals — formed carriers that follow long, curved perimeters.
- Belt-line and outer waist seals — flat or blade-type cores with a flexing lip.
- Sunroof and roof-rail seals — cores that keep a tight, low-effort fit on a moving panel.
Why Steel Instead of Pure Rubber or Plastic?
Rubber alone cannot store enough elastic energy to clamp a seal onto a metal flange for a decade of thermal cycling. A metal core gives the seal:
- Clamp load — the spring force that resists pull-off and water ingress.
- Shape memory — the seal returns to its profile after the door is slammed or the glass slides.
- Dimensional stability — the seal keeps its length and radius through heat and cold.
- Assembly aid — the carrier lets robots and operators push the seal onto the flange in one motion.
The Main Types of Steel Wire Core
| Type | Construction | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Straight wire | One or several parallel wires | Simple, low-clamp profiles |
| Zigzag / sinuous | Wire bent into a wave form | Flexible flange clamps, tight radii |
| Knitted core | Knitted wire mesh tube | Highly flexible seals, EMI-style containment |
| Flat / blade core | Rolled flat strip or flat wire | Belt-line seals with a flexing lip |
| Roll-formed U | Core pre-formed into a U channel | Door and trunk flange seals |
The choice is driven by how much the seal must bend, how much clamp force the joint needs, and how the extrusion line will feed the core.
How It Is Specified and Supplied
A steel wire core is normally ordered to a drawing that fixes the wire diameter, cross-section and pitch, temper, coating, coil weight, and packing. Because the core is fed continuously into an extrusion line, join welds and coil changes must not cause a stop, and the core must be clean and free of kinks. That is why carriers are supplied on spools or in level-wound coils with controlled camber and straightness.
Where to Source the Core
Hold-Tech manufactures precision formed wire and the steel cores that go inside automotive weatherstrip. We draw, temper, profile, and coat the core to your drawing, and we supply it level-wound for uninterrupted extrusion. Send the profile and material spec to operator@hold-tech.cn or call +86-186-60386138 and we will quote to the drawing.
